Global Warming: What can we do?

The planet is slowly warming up. Ice on land and at sea is melting faster than its normal rate. Many high altitude species are going to higher altitudes every year. Early flowering and unseasonal rain are observed in many parts of the globe. Here are some tips to do our part in reducing global warming.

Replace your present light bulbs (ordinary yellow bulbs) with electronic fluorescent lamps. They consume about 75 per cent less electricity and last ten times longer than ordinay bulbs. One high watt ordinary bulb is more efficient than two low watt bulbs in a multi-bulb fixture. For example, one 100W bulb generates about as much light as two 60W bulbs and saves energy.

Minimize the use of electrical appliances (Water heaters, Airconditioners). For example, Switch off water heaters soon after your bath as it consumes high electricity. Instead of electric water heaters, install solar heaters in your home.

While cooking, use pressure cookers as mush as possible. Keep ingredients ready before you start cooking. Keep the vessel closed while cooking and when the food is almost cooked, switch off the gas stove and keep the vessel closed to get the food fully cooked. Use ISI marked stoves which use less kerosene.

Close the refrigerator door properly after use. Keep your fridge full, for more economical operation.

Plant more trees. A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.

The easiest way to make your car more fuel-efficient is to keep it well tuned. A well tuned car uses up to 9% less petrol than a poorly tuned car. Keep fuel filters clean. Clogged filters use more petrol. Inflate car tyres to the right pressure which reduces fuel consumption by 5%.

Try to use public transport systems like trains and buses. Car sharing is an effective way to reduce cars on road. For example, If there is only 2-3 people in a 7-seater car, invite others also. Try to use small vehicles when the travelling people is less in number.

Walk rather than drive whenever possible.

Reduce waste by choosing reusable products instead of disposables. Buying products with minimal packaging will help to reduce waste. Whenever you can, recycle paper, plastic, newspaper, glass and aluminum cans. By recycling half of your household waste, you can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.
